Foods to Consider for Science Test

Math Test Tomorrow

Math textbook pages 352-353 have been assigned as extra credit for all, but there are a few students who are required to complete this assignment. They should know who they are. The extra credit is due tomorrow before students take their math test.
Students also have a social studies test tomorrow.
The informational literature projects were successfully completed today. The next project is due February 1 and should be a biography. Every student in our class was given a biography poster project to aid in the completion of this project.
In science students made pancakes and looked for evidence of chemical and physical changes. Evidence of a chemical change always includes A new substance being formed and may also include one or more of the following: An odor; Bubbles which indicate a gas has formed; an unexpected Color change; a Different temperature; and Energy in the form of light given off. Chemical changes cannot usually be reversed. The key difference between a chemical change and a physical change is that in a physical change no new substances are produced. On Wednesday's test, students will be asked to identify which foods should be on the menu at The Chemical Change Cafe. The Chemical Change Cafe only serves food which has undergone a chemical change. When analyzing whether or not a food can be placed on The Chemical Change Cafe's menu, students must give evidence to support their ideas. For example, trail mix can not be placed on the menu because it is a mixture and has not gone through a chemical change. Trail mix is not a new substance because it can be sorted into its orginal ingredients. Buttermilk biscuits can be served at The Chemical Change Cafe because they go through a chemical change. Evidence of a chemical change in biscuits includes bubbles formed by gas when the biscuits bake, an odor (aroma) produced by baking, and most importantly, a new substance is formed. Once the biscuits are baked, you cannot remove the individual ingredients used in the biscuit batter so the change is NOT reversible.

Mentos Science

" It was awesome!" was the general consensus of the Mentos and soda pop experiment. Anyone interested in buying the geyser tube can check out Steve Spangler's website. Steve's website also explains the science behind the explosion. We also watched the Mythbusters' episode that explored the ingredients that cause this sticky eruption.

No homework packet or spelling until 2008!

Homework:
math multiplication worksheet
any other work not finished at school (language, science)

Please check interims for missing work.
Have a great weekend!

What is a Chemical Change?

Today the third grade students presented their Christmas program to parents and students. The fourth grade students enjoyed seeing the third graders perform the same songs that they had performed themselves last year. The third graders did a very nice job.

Today we...
...took a math test.
...completed our reading tests on The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
...edited a spelling list.
...practiced action and linking verbs.
...finished reading Frindle.

Tomorrow we will...
...work through 6 different experiments and determine whether the changes are chemical or physical.
...continue with multiplication.
...finish our reading packets.
...eat lunch earlier because of third grade Grandparents' Day.

Are you and your child having trouble with multiplication? Try this site on lattice multiplication. It's not the way I learned multiplication, but sometimes it's easier for those who "don't get" traditional math.

Science is Yummy!

We are continuing with multiplication in math and Ohio tribes in social studies. Today we are reading chapters 6 and 7 in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. We will take the AR test tomorrow since we finished the book earlier than planned. Verbs are our language topic and chemical/physical changes are science.

Ask your child about mixtures and solutions in science. Are they chemical or physical changes?

Math-multiplication (3 digit by 1 digit) workbook p. 68
Science-Changing Matter centers
Social Studies-tribe work

Homework:
Anything not finished in class
packet
spelling

Please note that there have been some significant changes in Rocket Club qualifications. The majority of the Elementary teachers felt that last year's requirements were not stringent enough for this elite group, so a committee was formed and changes made. This year's requirements are as follows:
  • No more than 3 absences.
  • No more than 6 tardies/early dismissals.
  • No more than 3 missing assignments. If an assignment is missing for multiple days, it will count for multiple missing assignments.
  • No red cards.
  • No more than 3 yellow cards.
  • In fourth grade preparation for classes is also a requirement. Students may not come to class unprepared more than 4 times without consequences. Since we switch classrooms and teachers 3 times per day, students may be marked for lack of preparation more than once per day.

Please encourage your child to be prepared, do his/her work on time, and follow directions. I would love to see every student be a member of this elite group, but it does take effort to achieve.

Meet the Herdmans

We will be reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever until Christmas break. We are trying something different with this novel unit-each student has received a packet of all of the work that is due when we finish the book in two weeks. We will read and discuss one chapter per day together, but students may work at their own pace as long as they complete the minimum requirements per day. At the end of the book, each student will take two computerized tests on the book-one is an AR quiz and the other is a literacy skills test. There will NOT be a written test on this book.
Literature Projects are due on December 17, but may be presented earlier if time allows. Informational text is the genre for this report. When choosing a text, help your child choose a topic that really interests him/her. If the book seems a bit short, have your child read more than one book. For another copy of the report requirements/planning sheet, click here.

No Switch Wednesday

We did our first round of ThinkLink testing today taking the Language Arts test which has questions for reading, writing, and grammar. Overall the class did very well, but we are still having problems with inferencing and topic sentences. We will address these in class.

Today's Assignments
Math p. 65
Social Studies test-lots of A's and B's
Language Arts-finish magic frame and summary; fact/opinion; cause/effect
Science-work on Project: Matter

Tomorrow we will:
  • take a written test on The Stranger
  • take an AR test on The Stranger
  • do lots of other things:)

The Christmas party is quickly approaching on December 19. Shawnta Nipper will be our parent volunteer in charge of planning this celebration. A letter requesting your help/donations will be in this week's Friday Folder. Fourth graders do NOT exchange gifts at the party. If your child is in the giving spirit, he/she is welcome to bring a new, unwrapped gift to be donated to a local charity.

Our scheduled Santa Shop day is Monday, December 3. More information is coming in this week's Friday folder.

If you have any items to donate to this week's auction, please send them tomorrow or Friday.

Terrific Tuesday

Today we started a matter project in science. Students are to create a mobile of mini-projects about matter. We read the requirements of each mini-project and reviewed the evaluation criteria for the whole project which is due Monday, December 3. Students will receive time in class on Wednesday and Friday to work on the project, but if it is not completed on Friday, it will need to be finished at home over the weekend. Late projects lose 10 points. The only material needed from home is a hanger.

Tomorrow students will take a social studies test. They reviewed in class today and were provided with a study guide. Hopefully everyone remembered to bring theirs home-they were reminded at the end of the day!

In math we continue with multiplication. Students seem to understand the process of 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication, but are still struggling with facts. Unfortunately, the only way to learn the multiplication facts is to memorize them and practice them. They do not go away, but they do not change either. Aplusmath.com has fun games to help practice multiplication facts and other key math skills.

Don't forget to finish the homework packet and spelling activities!

How Many Days Until Christmas?

This week we are reading The Stranger, a really interesting book by outstanding author/illustrator Chris Van Allsburg. On Thursday students will take both a written and online test over the entire text, but tomorrow each student will illustrate a magic frame of the story. Ask for details!

On Wednesday students will participate in the second round of ThinkLink testing. ThinkLink is an online diagnostic assessment that provides teachers with a road map of the roads less traveled, ie., the items that really need to be taught/retaught to the students. We will finish the tests (in math and language arts) next Wednesday.
Friday brings with it many rewarding celebrations. Every student who met his/her AR goal for November will eat lunch in the classroom with treats provided by their teacher. So far 12 students have earned this privilege and time is not up! After recess students with no behavior issues for the month and no missing work at the time will get to watch the Good Behavior movie. Then the Rocket Club's first event will happen at 2:30 with prizes and treats!

Friday also brings report cards and the school newspaper. Please remember that the school fee is $60.00 for the year and covers a scant amount of the consumable materials used by your children (workbooks run around $15 apiece). At least $20 must be paid by Friday for your child to receive his/her report card. A subscription to the school newspaper The Roar of the Rocket costs $1 for the year. While every student receives the first page of the paper free of charge, subscription holders also get Grade Level News and Student Fun Pages. This month's edition mentions Bryce for her awesome singing on Veteran's Day, features artwork by Abby, and tells about the UDF field trip and the fourth grade read-in.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus...and homework this week. The homework packet and new spelling activity list were passed out to students today. All homework is due on Friday as usual.

Today's Assignments:
Handwriting-cursive worksheet
Reading-vocabulary worksheet
Journal-How I Spent Thanksgiving and letter home to parents

Journal Journey-If you were unable/unwilling to send your child's journal on its journey, please return it to school with a note.

Friday, November 23, 2007

Farkle McBride

I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving and was able to spend time with loved ones. I was lucky enough to do both!

Next week we will be taking our second round of ThinkLink tests. By comparing this test with the first test taken earlier in the year, we hope to have some evidence to point us in the right educational direction for your child.

In reading we will read the book The Stranger by Chris Van Allsburg. Students will be expected to take both a written and computerized test on this book.
This week we will continue with our study of matter by investigating physical changes and creating a working definition for physical changes. We will then spend December exploring chemical changes and deciding how the two types of changes are different-or are they?

Journal Journey

Tonight's homework is to come up with a person that you think would participate in our Journal Journey assignment. In class today, each student wrote an introductory letter describing him/herself and the project. Tomorrow we will be revising and rewriting this letter into a new composition book that will be sent home in order to be mailed to the person you picked to participate in this activity. When selecting a participant, please choose someone who will write an entry in the journal, send a postcard to school, and keep the journal moving by mailing it to one of his/her friends or family members. If you are unable to come up with a suitable person, please let me know and I will share one of my relatives with your child.

In reading we are reading and discussing Molly's Pilgrim. This book has a great message about tolerance and acceptance.

Tomorrow will be the science quiz which was postponed from last week.

Friday, November 16, 2007

Oops!

Sorry, I didn't realize I haven't posted for 2 days, but since everyone is getting their work turned in, I guess the students are doing a great job of keeping you informed.
Today we took the spelling test, practiced multiplying instead of doing repeated addition, and worked in our test preparation workbooks.
On Monday students will complete a science assessment in which they will explain everything they know about matter and how it is measured. They have seen the requirements and know that this is coming.
Enjoy your weekend!

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Wednesday is Early Release Day!

Don't forget that tomorrow students will take the AR test on So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George. They have heard the story aloud 3 times and read it at least once with a partner or alone.

Homework
Math p. 60 if not finished in class
Spelling 50 points

Next Week:
A new grading period begins Monday, November 19. We do have school on Monday and Tuesday, but there will be no homework other than work that is not completed in class. We will be reading Molly's Pilgrim and continuing our study of physical science. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday enjoy eating turkey, shopping, watching football, and spending quality family time!

Join Us for America's Biggest Bedtime Story!

This year, popular children's author and entertainer John Lithgow will lead the celebration of National Young Readers Day with a special bedtime reading of The Remarkable Farkle McBride!

What: Webcast
When: November 13, 2007
Where: www.bookitprogram.com/bedtimestory
Time: 4:00 p.m., CST (viewable all night long)

Wednesday is Pajama Day with a 2 hour early release time.

For ideas and explanations of the new spelling activities (they will start November 26), click here. There will be no spelling next week.

In science we reviewed volume and matter, then completed a worksheet and scavenger hunt about the properties of matter.

Monday Again

We hope you and your family will join us on November 13th by watching John Lithgow's webcast of The Remarkable Farkle McBride on www.bookitprogram.com (available all evening beginning at 4:00 p.m.CST). On Wednesday, our class will take an online quiz in hopes of winning prizes!

Unfortunately I had to leave school this morning due to my son's illness. Luckily it was only a slight ear infection brought on by a really obnoxious cold virus. I left the students in the capable of hands of Mrs. Weatherspoon and am sure she did a wonderful job.

In science students learned how to measure volume using the displacement method and practiced measuring mass in our exploration of matter.
In reading we (hopefully) started So You Want to Be President which we will read again tomorrow.
Be sure to read your child's take home journal each night to learn what he/she thought was most important about the day. I can't wait to read them tomorrow to find out how the day went.

Saturday, November 10, 2007

Enjoy the weekend!

Since we are learning about physical science (matter, chemical/physical changes) and the last time fourth graders learned about this topic was first grade, they may need a review. For fun and interactive learning, try these sites from the BBC:
Characteristics of Materials
Gases Around Us
Solids and Liquids
Changing States

Your students may tell you about a practice evacuation drill we held today. This is if there is ever a need to evacuate completely from the school grounds. Students did a great job today.

Monday will be honor Veteran's Day. Please be sure to wear your red, white, and blue.
Wednesday is early release and pajama day.

For next week:
homework packet
spelling 50 points

Next week's reading selection is So You Want to Be President. The textbook contains an excerpt, but we will be focusing on the entire nonfiction text. During the two days of Thanksgiving week we will read Molly's Pilgrim which reveals another meaning of the word "pilgrim". Then between Thanksgiving and Christmas we will abandon the textbook completely in order to read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Friday is the end of the grading period which means that all work must be turned in this Friday. Usually you would receive report cards the following Friday, but since that falls during the Thanksgiving break, report cards will be sent home the week of November 26.

Thursday, November 8, 2007

Tomorrow is Friday

Things to have finished for tomorrow:
  1. Study for spelling test.
  2. 50 points worth of spelling activities.
  3. Homework packet (A Not So Amusing Amusement Park, Math Spiral Review, and State Dailies).

Today we worked on vocabulary in science, took a reading test, started reading Frindle by Andrew Clements, took a multiplication quiz in math, and began a Native Americans of Ohio booklet. We also played Bafflegab in language for our creative writing journal.

We will have an emergency evacuation practice tomorrow. This is just a practice that we are required to do because of the crazy world in which we live. Our job is to keep your children safe!

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Journal Time

Today we began daily journal writing which we will continue to do each day. In each entry students are expected to write in letter/journal format three things that they learned that day. The journals are to be read by the parents who are asked to initial the entry for verification that the entry has been read. Parents are invited, but not required, to respond to the entry.

In science we are beginning a new unit on matter. Students took a pre-assessment today called an anticipation guide. I will use that to determine the direction in which we head and to differentiate instruction based on student need.

Today's Assignments
Math workbook 33
Reading What's Cooking? graphic organizer

Homework
Spelling 50 points
math spiral review, state dailies, and amusement park worksheets

49 shopping days until Christmas!

Our trip to United Dairy Farmers' Norwood manufacturing plant was a great success. Although our trip took longer than expected (stuck in traffic, missed an exit), the staffers at UDF were very patient and there to meet us when we arrived. The students seemed to enjoy visiting the freezer (50 degrees below zero) when their nose hairs froze and eating the ice cream at the end of the tour. Visiting the vat room was NOT a favorite because it smelled like sour milk and sanitizer. All in all, I think it was an excellent tour. The hairnets were just a bonus!

All students were required to write a note of thanks to our tour guide Pat. We are working on writing good letters with lots of details.

This week we are reading a play, Grace and the Time Machine. Our class is doing a great job not reading the stage directions out loud (even though there are long pauses while we read them silently). We will have a reading test on Thursday and our usual spelling test on Friday.

In math students took a pretest on chapter 3.

Thanks to all of the parents who attended conferences. It was nice to meet and/or see you and talk about your children.

Thanks too, to the parents who provided dinner for the teachers! It was a long night, but a worthwhile one.

Saturday, November 3, 2007

Next Week

Thanks for participating in the Harvest for Hunger. We collected over 400 cans, boxes, bags, and bottles of food that were delivered to the Owensville United Methodist food pantry and the St. Vincent de Paul pantry at St. Louis and greatly appreciated.

Don't forget that our trip to UDF is on Monday. Dress warmly and wear sneakers or other rubber soled shoes that won't slip.

Monday is also conference night. A time reminder was sent home on the Friday folder report.

Many students chose to take home their homework packets on Friday. Those that didn't can get them on Monday. There is spelling homework this week with a test on Friday.

No School on Tuesday!

Literature projects were a great success! Everyone had something to share-some even included food. The next project is due in December. The genre is informational text so a different planning guide was sent home with students on Friday.

Enjoy your weekend!

November News

The grandparents' day program was very successful. Many students were very happy to have their grandparents, uncle, aunts, and parents show their support.

Today we finished reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. All students are expected to take the Accelerated Reader test on the book. We also spent lots of time working on our learning contracts. Students who are interested in following Peter's and Fudge's adventures can read more in Judy Blume's Super Fudge and Fudge-a-Mania. There will be some time tomorrow to finish up contracts.

In math, we discussed the distributive property. See math text p. 132 for today's lesson. All fourth grade students are expected to memorize the multiplication facts 0-12. While most fo our class knows their facts, a little practice never hurts! www.aplusmath.com has fun practice drills. The math assignment was page 31 in the workbook.

Tomorrow is our good behavior/no missing work movie. Students with missing work will be given the opportunity to complete that work in a quiet environment.

Next week:
On Monday we travel to UDF. In the evening I will see many of you at conferences.

Tuesday

In science we began our physical science unit. Following are the indicators which will be addressed:

Physical Sciences

1. Identify characteristics of a simple physical change (e.g., heating or cooling can change water from one state to another and the change is reversible).

2. Identify characteristics of a simple chemical change. When a new material is made by combining two or more materials, it has chemical properties that are different from the original materials (e.g., burning paper, vinegar and baking soda).

3. Describe objects by the properties of the materials from which they are made and that these properties can be used to separate or sort a group of objects (e.g., paper, glass, plastic and metal).

4. Explain that matter has different states (e.g., solid, liquid and gas) and that each state has distinct physical properties.

5. Compare ways the temperature of an object can be changed (e.g., rubbing, heating and bending of metal).

In math, we started chapter 3. Much time has been spent learning such specific vocabulary as zero property, identity property, associative property, and commutative property. Students were assigned workbook p. 29.

We finished chapter 7 in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing today. Students were then given more time to work on their learning contracts. Since we are not switching classes for the rest of the week, more time will be spent in class finishing up the contract activities.

Please remember that all assignments with grades that are unacceptable may be corrected and resubmitted for partial credit. We will combine the original grade with the fixed grade to get an average which will be posted to the gradebook.

Rainy Days and Mondays

Today students took a social studies test, tomorrow it's math test day. On Friday we will complete our study of the design process (another term for scientific method).

In reading we began a literature unit for the book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. Each day we will read one chapter (ten in all) and complete a worksheet guided by the state language arts indicators for fourth grade. During the two weeks we will spend on this unit, each student will also be working on his/her own literature contract. The contract is broken into five sections-one for grammar, one for vocabulary, one for research, one for art, and one for creative writing. Together, the students decided how many activities needed to be completed for each heading. The learning contract will be worked on each day in class and turned in next Friday, Nov. 2.

This week in science we will complete our Secret Formulas unit by inventing toothpastes. We read and discussed Toothpaste: From Start to Finish during science and discussed the feel/foam tests that will be completed in class tomorrow. On Thursday students will do a "clean test," and then Friday each student will invent his/her own recipe for toothpaste.
Because of the nature of labs, students who are absent during a hands-on activity are not able to complete that activity. Instead, they must find a peer with whom to discuss the process and gather the data. Every student is required to take the Accelerated Reader test on Toothpaste: From Start to Finish. For another cool science design process using toothpaste, try this link for extra credit.

During computer we continued googling scientists. On Wednesday, each student will commence research on the scientist of his/her choice.

Vehicle Day

Friday's Vehicle Day was a huge success! I had no idea that fourth graders would be so excited about honking horns! Everyone who brought a vehicle to share with the students was kind enough to let the kids clamber all over, in and around their cars and trucks. The Owensville Fire Department hooked up the hoses so the kids could practice putting out fires. Both the State Highway Patrol and the Clermont County Sheriff allowed the kids to sit in the backseats of their cruisers (hopefully the only time they sit in the backseat of those particular cars).

My class would not let me leave the parking lot until I rode in Duke Energy's cherry picker, hence the white-knuckled grip. I actually thought the experience was really cool until Mr. Siefert informed me that the only way down was if I got us down. Apparently he has never seen me drive! Finally, I did manage to bump us to the ground.
Thanks to everyone who participated-it was a great time!

We are almost finished being inventors, at least for a while. Next week we will focus on toothpaste-testing ingredients then creating our own. Our next unit of study will be matter and physical and chemical changes.

In reading we will begin reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. We will spend two weeks reading this book and working on a learning contract to go with the book.

Everyone should be working on his/her mystery literature project!

Reminder: Social Studies test on Monday, Math test on Tuesday

Harvest for Hunger

This class has worked very hard to promote our Harvest for Hunger food drive. Many students made posters to hang throughout the building and motivate other classes. One group created a commercial to persuade others to give to people who may need a little extra help. I'm very proud of all of their hard work!

Tomorrow we will:

  1. take a spelling test.
  2. turn in our homework if it hasn't already been done.
  3. invent our own flavor of cola.

Today we:

  1. made observations, created a hypothesis, and designed an experiment to create a cola.
  2. took a reading test.
  3. played a game to review the operations in math.
  4. reviewed for Monday's social studies test.
  5. practiced identifying common and proper nouns (worksheet 23 and 24).

Late, but not forgotten

Today was an early dismissal day, but we still managed to get in our third reading of What Jo Did and discuss rising action and climax. Nothing like a chock full day!

In math the students finished a graphic organizer sorting clue words with the operation that each represents: in all=addition; in equal groups=division; left=subtraction, etc. There will be a math test next Tuesday!

In social studies, we finished a worksheet on timelines that compared how long different prehistoric Indians lived in Ohio. It is not too late to bring in shoeboxes, artifacts, and clay! There will be a social studies test on Monday!

In language we reviewed common and proper nouns. We will not spend a lot of time on nouns as the children have been learning about nouns for years! A worksheet was started in class and should be finished tonight.

In reading we reread the story What Jo Did. Tomorrow will be the weekly test on the selection.

Friday is Vehicle Day and Cola invention day. Be sure to ask your child how his/her cola tasted!

Wacky Wednesday...

Okay, so we were not wacky today. Tomorrow is a different story. Students can choose between dressing wackily (is that a word) or dressing in their Sunday best.

Union Terminal is such a cool building and the Real Pirates exhibit is definitely a "must-see". As my group kept telling me, "Mrs. Putnam, you said the last thing was your favorite!" Time is always a factor, so unfortunately, we were unable to spend as much time as we would have liked in the special exhibit. Had we know about the glitch in the afternoon schedule...
Yes, we were supposed to see the Omnimax movie The Alps. Due to an unforeseeable error (theirs, not ours), a projectionist was not available to run the movie for our 12 o'clock showing. The powers-that-be tried to make it up to us by giving us access to both museums and re-entry to the Real Pirates exhibit. At least an effort was made. Thank you to the oh-so-very patient students and parents for rolling with the situation!

Assignments:
Reading-we read to chapter 18 in The Toothpaste Millionaire and completed the cheese and tomato layers of our reading sandwich.

Homework:
Packet

Tomorrow we will finish The Toothpaste Millionaire. All students are expected to take the AR test on this book on Friday. During science, students will invent their own paste using the knowledge and observations gathered from Tuesday's ingredient test.

Terrific Tuesday= Hat Day!

100% Perfect Attendance! Woo-hoo!

Still need a few more things for science:
glycerin-can be found at craft stores
mint extract

Tomorrow is our field trip to Omnimax. Everyone needs to pack a lunch that will be eaten at The Museum Center. Although students will be assigned a specific chaperone, the movie and the Pirates exhibit do not require us to split up. The bus leaves at 9:00 a.m. and we expect to return around 2:00 p.m. While I understand if you wish to take your child home with you upon our return to school, please consider that there is still over an hour left to our day and I do plan to teach, so your child will be responsible for making up any missed work.

Today was our first Accelerated Reader assembly and we were WELL represented! Many students in our class received the 85% award for achieving an 85% average on all AR tests taken this year. Several students (named in Friday's entry) earned a new certification for September and celebrated on Friday with lunch in the classroom and a special treat. Two students received special recognition-Tim because he is on track for the Millionaire's Club (he has read over 100,000 words this year) and James because he is already in the Millionaire's Club. James has already, in just over two months, read over 1,000,000 words! Every student in our class has the potential to achieve the Millionaire's Club by the end of the year, but most of them will have to kick up the pace. Last year's Millionaire's Club received an all expenses paid special field trip to a tv news studio and a picnic at Eden Park. The goal? To read 1,000,000 AR words by the end of the year!

Count Week

The first week in October is one of the most important weeks for public school because this is the week when student attendance determines school funding. While attendance is important every single day, next week's student count will decide how much money our district will receive. To celebrate Count Week, we will have theme days:

Monday-Bengal's Day
Tuesday- Hat Day
Wednesday-Wacky Wednesday
Thursday-Dress Up Day
Friday-Spirit Day

On Friday, every child who has perfect attendance for the week will be treated to icecream!

If it is necessary that your child not be in school on one of these days, it is imperative that you send in a note explaining the absence.

The literature projects were incredible! Ths is the first time EVER that every student completed his/her literature project on time. The creativity of this group is amazing!

Today was the first monthly AR lunch to honor those students who met their monthly goals. As a reward for meeting these individually set goals, students eat lunch in the classroom with me and I provide a treat, usually a sweet. Morgan, Caleb, Nick, James, Jared, and Caitlin all met their September goals! Way to go Star Readers!
The next AR lunch will be on October 31. Students can start working towards their goals now!

Think Link Testing

Starting off a week with testing, not an easy thing to do, but fourth graders are amazing-they always put forth their best effort. Today's test was a diagnostic test in reading. Its purpose is to show where each student's strengths and weaknesses lie. This will help me determine which indicators to teach and how much emphasis to place on each. On Wednesday we will do the same thing for math. These tests are not graded, but they do give us some indication as to how well each student would perform on the Ohio Achievement Tests if they were given today.

FYI: Deposits for the trip to Washington D.C. must be made by October 8.

Assignments:
Math-workbook p. 15 (We began chapter 2 today.)

Tomorrow is Talk Like a Pirate Day (and Early Release Day)!

September 19 really is Talk Like a Pirate Day! Fourth grade students have permission to dress like a pirate as well as long as the attire does not go againgst the dress code! My pirate name is Red Bess Rackham. Find your own at http://www.piratequiz.com/.

Speaking of pirates, we will be attending the new "Real Pirates" exhibit at the Museum Center on Wednesday, October 3. While there we will also see the Omnimax film The Alps. Permission slips will be coming home in this week's Friday folder.
Today we began a new experiment to practice using the scientific method-Thumb Wars. We measured the circumference of each student's thumb and wrist and the length of each person's thumb in order to compare the data and make a prediction about who would be the Thumb War Champion. On Thursday we will form a hypothesis about who will win based on our data and then test our data.

Football No More: Due to a rash of incidents on the playground, there will be no more playing of American football. Also, students are NOT permitted to bring their own recess equipment to school. Equipment is provided every day.
Caterpillar Update: We have been hosting a monarch caterpillar for the past two weeks. Last night "he" went into a chrysalis! When we arrived this morning, what a surprise! The sickly looking caterpillar had formed a beautiful, jewel-like chrysalis! Thanks to all who provided milkweed for our caterpillar, especially Holly!

Have a great weekend!

Please remember to check your child's Friday Folder each Friday (or last day of the week) and SIGN and RETURN the left half of the Friday Folder Report. It helps me to know that you know that I know...about your child's progress:)

If your child has not already selected a realistic fiction book for his/her literature project, please help them do so or let me know so that I can help them choose an appropriate book. The project and presentation will take place on Sept. 28.

All students in Grades 2,3, and 4 will use a computerized diagnostic testing program called ThinkLink during the week of Sept. 24. Fourth grade students are assigned to the computer lab on Monday and Wednesday of that week. This is the first time for fourth graders, but the second grade teachers have raved about its effectiveness.

Today we learned about the scientific method using M&Ms, took a spelling test, practiced counting money in math, painted our Ohio maps, and used our Reading Buckle Down for test preparation. Ask your child for details!

The weather should be much better this weekend-ENJOY!

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Don't forget to turn in homework!

Tonight's To Do List
  1. Make sure spelling is finished and in backpack to turn in tomorrow.
  2. Make sure homework packet is completed and in backpack to turn in tomorrow. Put name on all pages.
  3. Study for spelling test.

Monarchs Unite!

Judy Krebs, educator from the Clermont County Soil and Water District, will be in the fourth grade classrooms once a month reinforcing science concepts. Today each student created his/her own life cycle of a monarch butterfly after discussion of the milkweed's lifecycle and the relationship between the plant and the animal.
We do not switch classes on Wednesdays because we have computer class and once a month Mrs. Krebs. It's really nice to have this self-contained time once a week with our homerooms. The time gives us a chance to decompress, catch up, and review skills from a different viewpoint.
Assignments:
Reading: Write a summary of "The Horned Toad Prince"; study for the test tomorrow
Math: Fix/finish math quiz pages 15 and 27
All Stars: Thanks for the jokes Bryce!

Tuesday

For you regulars, this will not be a surprise, but I am not usually able to update this page until after my first grader goes to bed. I consider it a lucky day when I can blog before 8:00. Thanks for your understanding!

Science News:

  • A few students did not return their parent-signed safety contract. Please be sure to return that by Friday.
  • A few students did not pass the safety test. Please ask your child whether he/she earned higher than an 80%. If he/she did not, the test will be retaken tomorrow.
  • Currently, we are working on observations vs. inference. Understanding the difference between observations and inferences is very important both in science and as a genereal reading skill. Ask your child about Professor Xargle and the inferences he/she/it made about Earthlets.
Math News:
Students are working on number sense, especially place value and money.
Reading:
Each student should be have chosen a fiction book at his/her level to read for the Sept. 28 due date. Please do not wait until the last minute to work on the project. I can tell when someone has procrastinated. Check out the fourth grade website for ideas and more information.
Language Arts:
Journal and letter writing are the types of writing on which we are focusing. If you have a journal or diary, let your child see appropriate parts. I plan to bring my journal to school this week.
