Field Trip

The students seemed to really enjoy the trip to Pattison Park based on the letters they wrote describing the trip. These letters are some of the best examples of writing I have seen all year.

Today is the end of the grading period so all work must be completed by this afternoon. To meet this goal, we will have a good behavior/work time movie this afternoon for students with no red cards, less than four yellow cards, and/or no missing work.

Today is also our AR lunch for those students who met their February goal. Congratulations Molly, Tyler, James, Hunter, Faith, Riley, Taryn, Holly Sa., Holly Su., Abby, Tim, and Bailey!

In science we continue to work on our weather contracts which are due March 14. Ask your child about his her weather abc book.

Congratulations to our Second Session Rocket Club members! They are Caitlin, Molly, Nick, Hunter, Taryn, Jessica, Holly Su., and Lexie.

No More Snow!

After our two-hour delay...
In math we started with fraction vocabulary and made flip books. We also practiced writing fractions from models. We have an assignment to complete for homework.
Mrs. Krebs came and played a weather game with us.

Lots of people made lots of money during Market Place.

Don't forget that conferences are rescheduled for tonight. Same time, same place as last Wednesday's schedule.

The two-hour early release was rescheduled for next Wednesday, March 5.

More Storms

It is not looking good weatherwise, but we'll keep on working and do the best we can.
Students wrote down this week's spelling words (all contractions) this morning. People who wrote neatly can use this list for the 5 point activity-write words neatly.
Our class took a math test today and worked diligently on their science contracts. Much was accomplished. Together we read The Houdini Box and discussed the vocabulary. We practiced "bustling" around the room.

If the weather is bad tomorrow, Family Fun Night may be canceled. Look for more information to come home tomorrow. If there is no school on Wednesday, conferences will also be canceled. Let's all cross our fingers for more high pressure systems and less snow!

Now we make them up...

Since Friday was our sixth snow day, we are now going to have to make up at least one day of school. No more snow allowed!
Friday folders were sent home on Thursday (just in case), but they did not have the Friday Folder report in them. I told the students that I would post the spelling words here in case they wanted to get started on their homework.

Spelling words
don't won't wouldn't there's we're you're doesn't I've here's wasn't
shouldn't couldn't where's hadn't aren't they're it's we've when's haven't

Challenge
it'll who'll might've mustn't we'd

Vocabulary

Their homework pages were also in the folder.
Our field trip was rescheduled to this Thursday. Conferences were rescheduled to this Wednesday with times staying the same.

Enjoy your weekend!

Last One

Many students did not complete math workbook p. 158 which will be due upon our return to school. Please ask your child if he/she has completed that assignment.

We are now officially out of snow days with bad weather predicted for Friday. Our field trip to Pattison Park that was canceled today will be rescheduled. It is also free now so students who had already paid were given their money to return to their parents (unless they left early on Tuesday). I will let you know when our new date is scheduled.

Conferences will also be rescheduled, but we do not have a date as yet.

Enjoy the snow! We're going sledding!

Weather Forecast

Last Wednesday we were lucky enough to have a visit from John Gumm, a meteorologist from Local 12 News. Caitlin and Abby, among others, were selected to help John demonstrate some weather concepts. If you have a weather question, just click here and Ask John.

Family Movie Night

Thank you all for coming to see Spiderwick Chronicles! An amazing 18 out of 22 students attended, plus others from other classes! While I really enjoyed the movie, it was much different from the books that we read in class. This is why I much prefer reading the book and THEN seeing the movie. Since the kids seemed to enjoy the outing so much, we are investigating future movies to see together later in the year.

Happy Valentine's Day-Late

Thanks to all of the moms and dads who sent in treats and paper goods for our Valentine's party. The kids had a great time as evidenced by the noise level, smiles, and mess! Many thanks to Shawnta for organizing the good time!

I hope to see everyone today at the movie!

Don't forget about the field trip next Wednesday. If you have misplaced the permission slip, just write a note giving your child permission to attend the trip and send in the $3.00 to cover the cost. We should be back at school by 11:30.

Another reminder that Wednesday is an early release day. School will be dismissed at 1:25 instead of the usual 3:25.

Conferences are Tuesday and Wednesday nights. If you have any concerns, please feel free to call me: 732-0661 ext. 439, or email: putnam_s@cneschools.org.

Next week:
We will not take a written test on The Great Kapok Tree since the majority of the class earned 100% on the AR version. (The minority earned 90%-still acceptable!) We will be reading Flute's Journey which is the tale of a woodthrush written by Lynne Cherry-the author of The Great Kapok Tree. All students will also take an AR test on this book.
The homework packet was sent home yesterday-all 3 pages. I would bet that there are already students who have completed this packet. Yes, there is spelling this week. Don't forget to complete your 50 points (or use your Valentine homework pass:)

If I don't see you at the movie, I'll see you Tuesday! Enjoy the long weekend.

2 Hour Delay

Only one snow day left until we start making up the days...

Friday was the winning date for our planned movie outing. We will meet at the Showcase Cinemas in Milford for the 4:50 showing of the Spiderwick Chronicles. This is not considered a school field trip-transportation is not provided. It is simply a fun way for our class to get together and watch a movie about a book that we have been reading in class. My son and I look forward to seeing you!
Reminder: No spelling this week. We will also postpone the reading test until next week since this week was so short:)
Next Wednesday we will go to Pattison Park for maple time! We'll explore the mystery behind making maple syrup. We'll explore the sugarbush and follow the process of making syrup as it goes from the tree to our breakfast table, and see how the process of making syrup has changed over the years.

Wacky Mismatch Day

The students dressed crazily today from their heads down to their toes! Most of the students have been here every day and are on target for perfect attendance and a treat for Count Week. It is really important that students be here every day, but especially during the two count weeks during the year (October and February) because student attendance during Count Week determines the amount of state funding each school receives. If your child was ill and unable to attend one or more days of Count Week, it is imperative that you send in a note explaining the absence ASAP.

Math-workbook 153 (new chapter)
Science-read p. C17-C20 in the text. Complete worksheet.
Reading-take novel test. Finish all work that goes along with From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
Homework-spelling and packet

Cyclones Win!

Many students claimed the field trip today was their favorite ever! The parents seemed to enjoy it as well.

Tomorrow students who have not yet taken the AR test on From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler will do so.

Pardon the Interruption

Is anyone reading this?

Sorry I missed posting yesterday. I am not feeling quite myself. Whatever bug is going around is trying to get me too. Yesterday the middle school had almost 100 kids out! Our building was around 75. Remind your children to wash their hands!

This week we will finish reading From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and uncover the mystery of the statue Angel. Students will take the computer literacy skills and comprehension tests on Thursday. They will also finish work on their scrapbooks that go along with the book.

In science we continue our study of the weather. What a lot of unusual weather we have had over the past few weeks to observe! The water cycle and clouds are this week's focus.

Tomorrow is our field trip to the hockey game. Don't forget to pack your lunch. Concession stands will be open, but you know sporting concessions-the items are usually pretty expensive!

This week is count week, so be here to be counted! Students who have perfect attendance this week will earn some sort of treat from Ms. Davis on Friday. If your child must be absent, be sure to send in a note explaining the absence.

Can you believe it's February already?

Happy 1st of February!
Literature projects were presented today. Great job on these biography reports!

There is a math test on Monday. Mr. Fiore also gave the students an opportunity to earn 5 points extra credit: Do p. 242-243 in the textbook.

On Tuesday, there will be a social studies test. We will also finish reading From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

Wednesday is our field trip to the Cyclones game. Don't forget to pack a lunch and wear your school spirit!

Plan on a reading test on Thursday-Students will take computer tests on From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

Friday brings a spelling test. Homework packets and spelling points should be turned in as well.

Conference notes were sent home today. I will only schedule meetings with those parents who request them, so make sure that you return the note promptly if you wish to have a conference. If you have specific concerns in math or social studies, be sure to note those so I can include Mr. Fiore and/or Mrs. Wood as necessary.

If you would like to send in treats or paper goods for the Valentine's Party, please return the note requesting help. Mrs. Nipper or I will be contacting parents for the party.
